The cave, the temple
This is where Bali's surf culture was born. The clifftop temple, the Kecak fire dance at sunset, the warungs packed with salt-soaked locals after a session. You don't just surf Uluwatu. You absorb it. The cave paddle-out, the long lefts peeling down the reef, the bats circling at dusk. It stays with you.
When.
May to September
Dry season, April to October. Southeast trade is the offshore.

Worth knowing.
- 1. Paddle out through the cave at mid tide. The channel opens up and avoids the worst of the crowd.
- 2. The Racetracks section breaks hardest at 4 to 6ft. Under that, stick to the Peak.
- 3. Warungs on the cliff charge tourist prices. Walk 5 min inland for the real thing.
Go.
Before you paddle.
- 1. Check local conditions before entering
- 2. Always surf with a buddy
- 3. Know your limits and skill level
- 4. Watch for rip currents
- 5. Respect local surfers and rules
