The harbour sandbar
A left that comes out of a river mouth in a Basque fishing town. When the sandbar is right, Mundaka is one of the best waves in Europe. When the bar is wrong, it is just a pretty harbour. The town is small. The days it works, it is not.
When.
September to December
North swell in autumn. The bar has to be there.
Worth knowing.
- 1. The wave needs the sandbar. After river floods it can go missing for a season. Do not trust last year's memory.
- 2. North swell with a south or southwest offshore is the classic combo. Autumn is when that lines up.
- 3. Park in town and walk to the harbour wall. You will know if it is on before you wax up.
