First Point, Gidget
This is where surf culture went mainstream. The 1959 film Gidget was shot here, and almost overnight surfing went from a niche Hawaiian tradition to a global obsession. Miki Dora, 'Da Cat', defined the rebellious, anti-establishment surfer persona on this very point in the 1960s. The wave is long, mellow, and forgiving. The lineup is not.
When.
September to November
South and southwest swell in autumn. Summer is smaller and crowded.
Worth knowing.
- 1. The best wave at First Point is a long right-hander that peels all the way to the pier. Get there early if you want a wave to yourself.
- 2. The lineup is political. Locals have been surfing this wave for decades and the pecking order is real.
- 3. Parking fills up fast in summer. If you arrive after 9am on a weekend, you're walking.
Go.
Before you paddle.
- 1. Check local conditions before entering
- 2. Always surf with a buddy
- 3. Know your limits and skill level
- 4. Watch for rip currents
- 5. Respect local surfers and rules
